all my sisters with me ♪ we are family ♪ >> hello and good evening. it's a beautiful night tonight. so thanks for joining us for geico sports xtra. i'm excited for this one. on taptonight, the madness continues in the ncaa tournament in a big bracket busting way. plus, the nationals decide the road aad for their star pitcher but first we are skating with the capitals who finished up their eight-game road trip. alex ovechkin is back on the ice for the first time in six days. first period, tied at one. this is unfair. alex ovechkin all alone. it's unfair for any goaltender. his 45th of the year. second period, scott walker mixes it up. watch out for that right upper cut. that's tough to recover from. walker, he did not return after taking that shot. but the capitals pick it up in
his absence. alexander semin on the rebound, his 33rd goal of the year. the capitals win 3-1 behind jose theodore's 33 saves. the terps did not disappoint at the big dance last night but did give fans an early scare. their tournament play will continue tomorrow against fifth seeded michigan state. they beat houston 89-77 last night thanks to the standout performance from freshman jordan williams who added a game high 17 rebounds. it was maryland's tenth straight victory in a first round game. tomorrow the terps will attempt to advance to the sweet 16 for the 14th time in history but it will not be a cakewalk against michigan state. >> we had it way inside last night. we're going to have to fight a lot harder on the glass tomorrow. we know that things won't be that easy. and so that's what you prepare for. >> all i've got to say, that
it's going to be a great game. two great coaches. it's going to be, you know, one of those games you can't really make that many mistakes. you're going toax cute your offense and -- to execute your offense and play good defense. other than that, you know, i don't have anything else to say. >> neither do we. but we'll take a look at michigan state who beat new mexico state yesterday. they're in search for their third straight sweet 16 and ninth under their coach izzo. [ inaudible ] maryland has won the last two meetings, including a victory last season. coach izzo knows exactly what he can expect from the terps tomorrow afternoon. good i think what we look forward to is we know we're going to play a good, tough, classy team that i think my players respect theirs and vice versa. and maybe we're a little bit of an underdog. that doesn't happen to us too often. maybe that's good.
>> georgetown's loss is no longer the biggest upset in the tournament thanks to the number one overall seed kansas. they suffered a sunning second round loss. it is the upset of the day. the iowa panthers taking on the top seeded kansas jay hawks. we pick this one up in the final minute. jay hawks are down one but then a very daring three-pointer here. it makes it. tons of people's brackets are busted today, mine included. northern iowa disposes of the tournament's overall top seed 69-67. they play tomorrow's winner between maryland and michigan state. elsewhere today's action, how about the two seed in the south villanova, they survived a scare in the first round but today another tight one with tenth seeded st. marys. we are tied at 59. but later tied at 65, mickey mcconnell, the heave. look what happens. he banks it in for 3. they go
on to shock villanova 75-68. elsewhere blaine taylor, it looked good for the monarchs for a while. great ball movement. all five players touch the ball before the score. odu takes a one-point lead but in the final moments of this one, the bears win this one 76- 68. ncaa women's action, georgetown the number five seed taking on -- [ indiscernible ] the hoyas took a two-point lead into the break. they would start the second half on fire. a 13-0 run highlighted by monica's three here. the georgetown women roll 62- 42. they move on to the round of 32. it's time for a tv time-out but when we return, the nationals decide stephen strasberg's pass to the big
the marlins 5-3. but the team made a big announcement today regarding their young superstar stephen strasberg and the news comes just a day after his most impressive outing. he'll start his career in the minors. last night in his third spring start he struck out -- [ inaudible ] don't be surprised to see him move up pretty fast. he walked just one batter and struck out 12 in nine innings. he spoke yesterday after the game. >> been able to make some adjustments, working in the bullpens and trying to throw as many pitch as i can starting in the strike zone to force contact and not so much nibbling. so, you know, it's a part of the game. in order to go deeper in volume, you have to evolve at the plate. i've been trying to work hard and been able to have a little bit of success so far. >> sticking with baseball, the
orioles split squad was in action against tim wakefield and the red sox. his knuckleball is already in midseason form. kevin going deep to left. that one is gone. the red sox go on to shut out the birds 6-0. tonight's geico 15 minutes of fame takes us to the wrestling mat where hudson taylor finished fourth in the ncaa tournament with his win this weekend. he finishes the season with a 42-4 record. he leads maryland as the school's all time winningest wrestler. he's also the all-time pins leader. his career as a terp earned him our geico 15 minutes of fame. stick around. sports xtra will be right back.
here two hours a day, four days a week. that's eight hours. there's 168 hours in a week. eight hours a week is a very small price to pay to work with your teammates and be the best you can be. and so i like what we've got thus far. we've got guys working extremely hard. it's a long off-season. and part of it is getting better as a football team. there's only one way you're going to get better. throwing and catching and getting stronger. and that's by working out and working out together. that will wrap up this edition of geico sports xtra. thanks for letting us be a part of your nature. have a great night.
